Liam’s Helmet

Liam was diagnosed with Plagiocephaly  about a month or so ago, although we knew his head was misshapen way before that.  At first, the doctors blamed it on his vacuum extraction.  Then they told us to switch the side of the crib he sleeps on.  This helped but didn’t solve the problem.  About 2 months ago, Liam’s physical therapist told us that she felt like Liam needed a helmet and that we would need a referral from his neurologist.  We saw his neurologist and talked to him about our concerns.  He said that helmets are purely cosmetic but referred us to a plastic surgery team that specializes in cranial molding helmets.  After seeing the team, they agreed he needed a helmet and set us up an appointment to have Liam’s head cast for a helmet.

Having Liam’s head cast wasn’t the most fun but he handled it like a champ.

Liam has been wearing his helmet now for two weeks.  He is adjusting to it well.  Liam wears it for 23 hours a day, with an hour off so we can bathe him and clean out the helmet.

Today is Liam’s first two week helmet adjustment appointment.  He has helmet adjustment appointments every two weeks for 4-6 months in Jackson, MS, which is about 2 1/2 hours away from where we live.  In order to help Ben and I miss less work, Ben’s parents have offered to take Liam to these appointments.  So today is the first time that Liam is going to Jackson without one of us and I’m so nervous about it.  Not that I don’t think they will do an excellent job with him but I would just always rather be with him for appointments.  I feel an extreme amount of guilt for not being with him.  Being a working mom is really hard, especially when your child has special needs.  I am really thankful that we have such an awesome support team.

Well, I think he definitely has a superhero thing going on. What a precious little soul! I’ll keep praying for all of you. I can’t imagine how hard it must be to be away from him on days like this. 🙂

Thank you, we actually just ordered him a new name sticker in a different font because this one is already coming off. I think the stickers help!
